Mansfield police: 1 man killed, 3 wounded in shooting at baby shower

Aug 11, 2023Aug 11, 2023

A 25-year-old Mansfield man was fatally shot Sunday at 2:30 a.m. at a residence at 137 Blymyer Ave. where police say a baby shower was being held.

Three other shooting victims were injured by gunfire and sustained non-life-threatening injuries, according to Assistant Mansfield police Chief Jason Bammann.

Possible multiple suspects remain at large, according to Bammann.

Bob Ball, a Richland County coroner's investigator, said Jahasee Cobb died at the scene. His body will be taken to Montogomery County Medical Center for autopsy, Ball said.

"We have little details at this point other than there was some type of an altercation between several subjects," Bammann said Sunday morning while Mansfield police held its annual Cops N Kids clothing event for children in need at Walmart on Possum Run Road. "It appears that maybe subjects left and returned with guns. And there were multiple shots fired."

He said the other three people who sustained gunshot wounds are in recovery at a hospital.

"I was told it was a very chaotic scene," he said. "Individuals tried rushing the scene so the officers had to call for mutual aid to keep them out of the scene. Very chaotic. Makes it tough to investigate scenes like that when your focus is to try and protect the scene."

He said there were multiple people there but so far nobody has told officers they saw anything or could provide any information.

Bammann said no children were struck by gunfire.

The assistant police chief said this marks the eighth homicide in the city this year.

Police were alerted to the shootings by 911 callers and also by Shotspotter activation.
