The whimsical line was inspired by his baby’s “super smiley” personality.

Kids’ furniture doesn’t have to look childish. Case in point, a new collection for West Elm by fashion designer Joseph Altuzarra, which seamlessly balances whimsical motifs and color palettes with stylish forms that kids (and adults) won’t soon outgrow.

The new launch includes 42 pieces altogether and serves as a “love letter to [Altuzarra’s] two daughters,” per a company press release. It’s a collection that encompasses everything from gliders and rugs to tables and cribs—perfect for outfitting an entire nursery or playroom.

The concept was born out of Altuzarra’s own experience designing a space for his daughters, Emma and Charlotte. “When I was working on decorating my kids’ rooms, everything I was finding was either very, very kiddie and not something that I felt they’d grow into, or things that were too grown up,” he told Vogue of the creative process.

The result? A series of pieces that reflect his daughters’ interests. For example, the cloud and balloon patterns found on pieces like the mobile, shelf, and sheet set reflect Charlotte’s “very sunny” and “super smiley” personality. Similarly, star patterns on pajamas, bedding, and other pieces evoke a sense of wonder and curiosity.

Naturally, it was a special collaboration for Altuzarra, who hand-drew all of the illustrations and designs and appears alongside his daughters in the campaign photography. “[It’s a] deeply personal collection,” he says, “rooted in my own experience as a father, as well as my passion for design and interiors.”
